Mini Tut. Make an object with the Smudge tool!

PI 10 [any version will work]

Description: Anne 's tutorial is quite addicting...lol. Besides making an object you can make backgrounds, objects that look like they were crocheted or knitted and all kinds of things could be done with this. I think it has lots of possibilities as to what you can do with this knowledge.
Author: Anne Green
Rosalie Elmore I only added a little bit of info the idea was totally Anne's. Lynn has also given more instruction which may be helpful I have added at the bottom what he gives.
Terms of Use: Please read
Skill Level: Easy I assume you know where the tools are in PhotoImpact. I would suggest that you take the free Beginners Workshop to learn this program if you do not know how to use it very well.
Tools: Smudge Tool
Additional Files: Different objects like flowers or something you made, colorful things work well for this.

NOTE: Save your work often. I suggest you read the entire tutorial, before you start. Where it reads "Rc" in this tutorial, it means right click. And if you need help, or if you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact me at: blurose@wildblue.net.

Instructions:

The snake shown at the top of this tutorial and Anne's remarks as she showed him to the board: Meet Sammy the Smiling Smear Tool Snake.:wiggle

To make him I merged a DPO oval onto a white background then, using the smear tool (paint as object) at shape "round" (same diameter as the oval) a low soft edge setting and high degree of density, I dragged it around to make my snake. Then I gave him a green background, a face and a shadow and voila! The 'shading' just "happened"

Lots of interest shown in the how to part so Anne wrote this mini tut below.

Click out of Mode when you are finished drawing your shape.

Lynn has given more detailed instruction that you may find helpful.

--------------------------------------
To continue on, Ann then posted this one at the PI-I board below.

Anne wrote: This evolved from using the smear tool on a simple photo of light blue flowers against green foliage. When I'd finished dragging the smear tool around (at various sizes and settings) I played a bit with the Water colour effect and the Emboston filter (Cyberworks?).

When Anne posted her design above it really caught my attention I loved the Knit look in the pattern she showed. I didn't know at this point how she did it.

I had to come right back because I cut out a section of your knit pattern ...then used it. I love the knit!
-------------------------------------------------
Next is after I looked at Anne's Mini tut and got the settings she used I started really playing with the knowledge. I changed the settings to see what it did and started saving those as brushes in my EP so I could use the brush settings again. I found
this was so much fun and began to see endless possibilities of things you could do. I used a spider to see what I would get with these settings. [I use PI 10] I clicked on the Panel radial button to open the Tool Settings-Brush Box. In the Screenshot
the Advanced tab view shows the spacing is set on 10. The Shape tab shows a round brush set at 71, the brush angle is set at 0 and the soft edge at 6. In order to change the spacing of the smudge tool you must open the tool settings-brush box. [In PI 10]

Oh boy!!...lol I won't bore you all the different ones I tried but will show the 2 I posted at the board
I couldn't believe the designs I could get using this tool! Below is using some flowers and realizing I
Could go outside of the white paper! Spacing is 10 in the lacy one below...

This is using a tube from Rainbow Coffi of the little girl. I got some nice lacy designs with this one.
To make the lacey design stand out better on this one I used FM File Tools/ Blend Emboss set as

Intensity 0.117 and Grey Level at 209. You can also just sharpen your design to make it show up better.

It is the using of something colorful or having different colors that you can really make some neat patterns. It all depends on where you grab it, then going in and out of mode to grab another section. You can go completely outside of the area, but in a continuous stroke, from off the side or bottom and come back down at the top!!!!
Ok just one more... Used for text.

The background is made as a seamless tile, with Simple Filter, that is shown on this tut page.

Again my thanks to Anne Green for this neat little tutorial. Like Lynn said "Who would of thought you could use the Smudge tool as a paint brush like this!"

I will share the setting I used to get some border edging you can use the results for various things as a fill.
