Description: This tutorial is directly from PhotoImpact International Board and the instruction is from a member Jim. This is brilliant and I do not want these instructions lost as to how he did some of the Text.

This is becoming a lot of fun, and since I've been trapped in my annoyingly quite little town for the past two weeks it comes as a welcome distraction. So, why not do another one? I apologize if it hurts your eyes...it
is a bit bright.

Jim I love the font you used and how you did each one is so neat. Could you elaborate on how you got the effect on the word luminosity I would love to try that?...colorful but not too bright I love what you did...Jim turned sideways like that is cool but so are they all.:clapper

It's amazing what you did with the letters, Jim.  How did you turn them side wise? Would you tell?

Thanks everyone.

I'll make a few screen-shots to show the "luminosity" and turning the letters sideways, because I think it
would be easier to show you than it would for me to try to explain. I'm not on my computer right now, but
I'll get them up, hopefully, later tonight.

OK, first the easy one, turning the letters sideways. You can just use the perspective function on the
transform tool, but I don't like the way it looks sometimes so I do it the old fashioned way.

The truth is I just grabbed the handles on the "distort" function of the Transform tool and dragged them
until it looked right. That's the easy explanation, but my friend John Thrasher (who was head of the art department at my university) would have a fit if he knew I didn't go through all of the theory behind how I knew where to drag them so:

You can make lay out  lines as a guide by using your paint as object mode, then when they are no longer needed just delete them.

I used the name Lilly because I have a "grandchild" named Lillian---she's not my actual relative but I took
in her and her mother when they were in trouble once so she's an honorary granddaughter. Maybe her
mother can use the image for her scrapbook...and besides, with all of the upright straight letters it was easy to work with.

First you have to imagine where the ground in your image is, I used the blue line to represent it. That is
where the ground would be if you were looking at the picture like you were in it.

OK, we have the ground, now we need to know where the horizon is. The horizon in a picture is just like
t is in your back yard, it is the farthest point you can see. I marked it with the yellow line.

Now is when it gets tricky. You need to find where the "vanishing point" is. The vanishing point is an
imaginary point that on the horizon, if you look down the side of the object it will point to the vanishing
point.  To find it you need your word (or object) which I had turned off when I made the lines going to the point (sorry).

The lines running diagonally from the red dot (vanishing point) are the sight lines. if you pick a point along
the horizon (red dot) and then run lines from the top and bottom of your word (or object) to the point you
will see the angle your word needs to be at. I hope that's clear, it's the best description I can think of.

Now using your transform tool (distort) you can drag the handles until the word matches the lines you've
made and the word should look sideways.

The real problem comes when you realize your horizon, vanishing point, and sometimes even the ground
lines can be off of the screen...I outlined where the actual screen would be on this word in red dots. The second image is what you'd see on the screen. But not to worry, as long as you have the memory you can expand the canvas to ridiculous sizes, draw your lines, make your word, and then crop to the proper size...ain't technology great!

Now if you want some thickness to make it look really 3D you can do basically the same thing going the
other way. You pick a vanishing point going the other way (about equal distance from the center usually)
and draw your lines going to that point.

At this point I duplicated the word as an easy cheat. I changed the color to gray and using the distort
feature of the transform tool I moved it back and fit it to my vanishing point lines. When I was happy I
used the object tool with the Bezier curve setting and connected the two using the 3D trim setting.

It's a little work, but it makes a good looking image.

I'll get the "luminosity" one up soon...but it's basically this technique just using song funky settings with the objects and transparency.

Me too - pretty pleeease...

And I don't quite see what you mean by using the bezier tool to connect the 2 sets of letters. Did you draw several shapes  for each letter?  Sorry if this is more than you want to be bothered with:wiggle

OK, now the Luminosity one (which I misspelled on the first image...arrgh).

I skewed it so that it looked like it leaned forward and is coming at you slightly. The font is Enview BTW.

I duplicated and resized the copy along the vanishing lines shooting it up and away.

Next I used the object tool--with the Bezier setting--and connected the letters one section at a time...
I went to my Easy Pallet and under Material Attribute I chose Glass G18...then under Material--Gel G13. Once I did that it defaulted to 3D round but I changed it back to 3D trim...then I adjusted the
Transparency of each section to my liking leaving it so I could see the previous section a little.

Where the letters curved I followed the curve, where they were straight I kept it flat...pretty simple really.
The sections that run along the tops of the letters I left a little more opaque just to add some "glow."

Finally I eliminated the word on the back that I connected it to in order to give t a more light like feel.

One quick tip, it helped me to move the word in the foreground to the top layer after each new object.
When I didn't it got pretty confusing pretty quickly.

I hope this helps, if I didn't explain anything clearly enough feel free to ask me to clarify things.

Sorry, I guess I should have been more clear. The head of our English dept always introduced me to
people as "this is Jim, he's a great writer because his mind doesn't think in straight lines." I think it was a compliment,
but regardless, I do sometimes get into my own world and just assume others can decode me. :laugh2

So, yes, each section was done separately. You have to look pretty close, but I left the Bezier tool in edit mode and took this screen shot. You can see there were already two sections done. I marked them with arrows as well as the edit mode lines.

It does get kind of labor intensive as you can see from the layer manager shot here. This is after I deleted
the lay lines, if you look at the object numbers you can see it was a bit complicated.

It was fun copying the layers and pasting them in the new image composite because it puts them in one at
a time and you can watch all you've done recreated in high speed. Pretty cool.

WOW Jim thank you so much for writing out all the details on this I really really appreciate you doing all
this as I just couldn't quite see how you did this. I needed the word 2 times and missed a lot of other stuff
so will try doing it now. I just didn't have the knowledge you gave in detail here. Again THANK YOU sweetie. :hug

I will add what I was doing so you can see why I asked..good for a laugh I totally get it now.
