PhotoImpact 10
(Can be done with any versions).

Description: I am writing this tutorial in the hopes that it will assist you in learning how to begin to make your own beautiful scrapbook pages. Many want to do this using the program PhotoImpact but aren't able to find tutorials on learning how. In case you don't have any idea where to start I hope you will enjoy trying this out.
Author: Rosalie Elmore
Terms of Use: Please read
Skill Level: Beginner I assume you know where the tools are in PhotoImpact. I would suggest that you take the free Beginners Workshop to learn this program if you do not know how to use it very well.
Tools: Path Shapes, chalk brush
Additional Files: Four of your own pet photos. Please download the small file here. Put the unzipped folder on your desktop. Read the read-me file that's in the folder.

NOTE: Save your work often. I suggest you read the entire tutorial, before you start. There are some beautiful examples on page 3 at the end of the page. Where it reads "Rc" in this tutorial, it means right click. And if you need help, or if you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact me at: blurose@wildblue.net

Instructions:

First I would like you to always remember, when you use your own photos, always duplicate the original [key Ctrl-d] and crop or make any changes with your copy. Close the original. Save your changed photo as a .jpg. You can keep your changed photos in the same folder as the original if you wish [or a folder of your choice.] You will have to choose a few pictures so select 4 photos you want to work with. Decide on one picture to be larger than the rest that will be your main photo. Save them when you finish and close them out.

My large picture is 1189x1016 pixels. You can enlarge yours if necessary. My smaller photos are cropped and 427x445 pixels.

Open a new white image [key Ctrl+N] of 8x8 inches. Your size in pixels will be 2400x2400. Note; I am using 300 resolution so it is a good quality print out and will fit on a regular sheet of good quality paper. At the end of the tutorial I will explain how to resize it to show on the board or to send someone in an email.

Open your main photo and bring in PI. Rc-copy, select your new page and Rc-paste. Move your photo to the upper portion in the center of the page. While it's still selected, Rc-Align-Center Horizontally. Deselect your photo. To select a light color for your background Edit/Fill [key Ctrl+F] . I used #F6E7D6.

We will add background papers in a few minutes behind this first photo. Save your page, File/ Save As, select .ufo

Select your Path Drawing tool, custom shape Fr06. Color black, 2D. Draw a shape about 764x725. Place it at the bottom left side of the page. Rc-Duplicate and slide it right beside the first one. Rc-Duplicate once more and slide it over against the 2nd one. Use the pick tool    and select each one of the three, holding your Shift key down as you select them, align-top. deselect them.

To look like this below. Save again by clicking on this radial button.

Select the 1st shape you made. Go to Edit/Fill and Image. Find the picture file you saved, one of the three. You will see it displayed in the Sample section of the fill box. Choose Fit to image. Click Ok

Your 1st picture will be similar to this one below.

Repeat this for the next 2 shapes, with your remaining 2 pictures. Using your pick tool select each of the 3 pictures. Rc and merge as a single object. Center horizontally. Deselect.

I will add here now, that if you want to use a seamless tile, for your background, you can do that simply by clicking on the background and using the same instruction-fill, image -find your tile. Instead of fit the image you use the tile the image for doing that.

Save

Now we will put some papers behind the main photo. Select Path Drawing /Tool Shape /Rectangle-2D, any color for now,  width 1369 height 1170. Rc Arrange send to back, this will be behind your main photo now. Select the rectangle and using the transform tool, we need to rotate  so change your setting to 10 degrees. Click on the small down button under the word rotate. Click once on the word counterclockwise. You will now have a duplicate of your rectangle and it will be turned slightly on top of your photo. Rc

Take a look at the picture below, the first one on the left side, shows what you will have now. I did color mine so you can see the layered papers. Deselect. Select the 1st rectangle again. Copy rote as you did in previous step but this time click once on the word Clockwise. The duplicate is at the top [middle picture shown below] Rc Arrange and send to back. Select all of the papers and your photo with the pick tool Align-center both.          Save

on to page 2  [3] [4] The work of others.
