Skill Level: Intermediate. I assume you know where the tools are in PhotoImpact. I would suggest that you take the free Beginners Workshop to learn this program if you do not know how to use it very well.
Tools: Path Shapes, paint brush, dodge/burn
Additional Files: The pieces I made as a template for this tutorial if you wish to recolor and use them. Made for a 8x8 inch scrapbook page. This is a .psd file of the pieces including the stitching. Zip File

NOTE: Save your work often. I suggest you read the entire tutorial, before you start. Where it reads "Rc" in this tutorial, it means right click. And if you need help, or if you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact me at: blurose@wildblue.net

Instructions:
*Refresh this page as I have changed some things to work out this tutorial better. I may revise as I get feedback from others that try this.

Download the zip file and open it.
Open  your PI program. Make a new page size 2400wide x 675high [pixels] at 300dpi. We need the width to make the ribbon for 8x8 scrapbook pages but it doesn't have to be that 8x8 inch size to make the ribbon. It's easier to work on a smaller size paper.
Bring in the template. Select all of the ribbon pieces there is 11 of them, don't miss the small one at the top behind the last piece of ribbon on the right side. When you have them all selected Rc and copy. Select your new page and Rc Paste, this will put the copied ribbon pieces on to the new page. You can close out the template for now.

I want you to save this new page with the template as a .ufo, or a psd file. This way you can save again when you start making your own ribbon by clicking the save radial button.

To begin use your Path Drawing tool and select the rectangle shape in 2D. Any color or use a background tile to fill the shape. Draw a size about 607 wide x 274 high [pixels]

Click on the Edit radial button you will see this...

Select the bottom left side red dot and pull this down and in towards the center.
Then select the top left one and bring it straight down as shown in the picture below. You will have a slanted top line and slanted bottom line.

I made screen shots to show how the right side is curved. Make a point on both sides of the corner one. Then delete the middle point Rc and convert to curve. Repeat the steps for the bottom right corner. PleaseSave

Adjust the shape to look like this one below and click out of edit mode. This completes the first shape.

You can put the 1st piece to the far left side of your paper.

PleaseSave

Now for the 2nd piece. Draw a rectangle shape 2D about 183w x186h. Click on Edit Mode. Select the top right red corner and just bring it downward. You need the top left side rounded so do it the same way you did on the 1st piece. Add 2 points on each side of the corner red dot then delete the center one and RC Convert to curve. This second piece will go behind the first one so RC /Arrange/ Send Backward. Slide it in place behind the 1st piece.

Save

Just to let you know I am not going to go on with all 11 pieces. Since you have the template most all of the pieces can be looked at to see how they were edited. To see the edit, just click on one of the ribbon pieces and click on your Path tool radial button. Click on Edit Mode and you can see where the red dots are. You may use the pieces in the template if you want to to save time I just wanted to show you how to round the corners and edit the rectangle piece so you would know when you do a different ribbon design.

Piece 3 is the same size as # 1 but it was rounded on the 4 corners and not slanted any, just a straight piece with the rounded corners. Piece 4 is the #2 piece duplicated and Flipped Horizontally.

Piece 5 Front one is a duplicate of #3 piece but I made it wider and rotated it 8 degrees clockwise.

I think you can see by the arrangement of the template how the pieces are placed. The very small # 10 piece is #4 resized to fit up there. Number 11 is #3 but wider. I am not sure if that one was done at a 10 degree slant lol I didn't write it down.

Important: If you have done your own ribbon shapes be sure you save them as a template in .ufo or .psd format before you darken them or do anything to them so that you can still edit the shape in a later project.

On the inside fold pieces, #2, #4, #8 and #10, these are made darker by using Brightness and contrast. As shown in the screen shot below. You may have to click it 2 or 3 times to darken it enough depending on what you are using for a fill on your ribbon.

I gave some depth to the other top and back pieces by using the Burn tool to darken some areas of the ribbon pieces But the level setting should be set to about 25. Darken around the edges of your pieces some and I also did the middle where the stitching will be.

Before I did the stitching part I SAVED it and closed out PI. I reopened PI and brought the ribbon back in to work on it. Because of the size and the steps to make the entire ribbon you may want to do this somewhere in the middle of doing the ribbon pieces. I did not want to loose my work!!! Or have PI freeze up!!!!

To make the stitches I used the paint brush and painted them IN MODE not directly on the ribbon. Brush size 5, 0 transparency and 0 Soft edge setting. I duplicated the row of stitches so you can clearer. lol I did put the stitches to the ribbon in the template so you can re color those to go with your ribbon if you want to.

The stitches are made for each piece when I completed a section I went to Effects/ Fills and Textures/ Texture Filter effect embossed and #001 paper. I changed only the Scaling to 50 instead  of 100.This will put a pattern on the stitches that makes it look more like thread. Shadow the stitches to your preference but not heave you do not want them 'floating' on top just defined. I used a right drop shadow settings 1-1-100-72-3. You can also shadow you ribbon piece to your liking.

You can use other filters like Penta/Jeans is also a neat one on backgrounds or stitches.

I hope I have given enough instruction for you to make your own designs for scrapbook pages or where ever you might put your creation.

On the ribbon like this background on the web page, shown as an example at the top, I tried something different. On the pieces of ribbon I did  Paint on Edge [POE]. Using the paint brush, color see screen shot below. then Effect/Creative /POE Change the settings if necessary for your ribbon. You want a darker edge around it, this was done in place of using the burn tool, could be used along with the burn tool too.

If you have any questions email me, I will help in any way I can.
