PhotoImpact 10
(Can be done with any version).

Description: Basics. I am hoping this will help a bit more on the question of  1. How do I make a hole in my background paper so a photo can be put under it? 2. How do I color my frame or how do I color my background? 3. How do I cut out a small piece of that huge size paper to use for my frame.

NOTE: Save your work often. I suggest you read the entire tutorial, before you start. Where it reads "R/C" in this tutorial, it means right click. And if you need help, or if you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact me at: blurose@wildblue.net

Instructions:

To start I choose the white background and not the transparent one in most cases.
Screen Shot 1

After I R/C and copy paste  I go to the Layer Manager. I hide the base page so it will now have a transparent background. I did not make a screen shot of this.

NOTE: This is the same way you would fill any element you make, the same procedure!
Screen Shot 2

Below I pulled in my frame to use, in this case it is a bracket frame, in plain black color. Any frame can be used though. Place the frame where you want it on the page and then deselect it.

Select the background paper. You will see the dancing ants around it.

Click on your eraser and change the settings, Shape, transparency and Soft edge as shown in the screen shot below.

Screen shot 4 Below

Shadow any objects you have added if you wish.

Since I saved all my screen shots as a jpg it does show a white space where I erased it on the screen shot.
Screen shot 5 below.

Something like the above is what you will have but when you have it saved as a .png it will be a large file. You will see a grey and white checked pattern on the png file where the cut out is for a photo.
This is what you will put in a zip file to share with others along with your terms of use.

When I have finished my Quick Page and saved it as a png file, I then resize it so I can use it as a preview and since this save will be a jpg re name your QP and show preview in the file name. The largest side being 600 pixels for your preview.

If you need more information just email me or ask at the PI-I Scrapbook forum.

Part 3 To answer this question.

**I am stuck right now on how to cut out a part of a paper to use for a picture and FRAMES!!! **
I will address this in the morning. In the mean time try doing it by filling your frame as I instructed above. Be sure to look at the frame after you get done with the fill of your paper, at 100% so you can see it clearly as the paper you used may not work well for your frame. If you don't like it try a different one by doing the fill process again.

Lets begin.

You have  your quick page as done above up to doing the fill in your frame. You have a beautiful paper that is way big so lets say it a freebie one for  12x12 inch sb pg. At 300dpi it will be huge when you bring it into PI. Probably 3600x3600 pixels to be exact.

So I just take my frame off of the QP I am working on, just slide it over to your workspace which will give it a new box all by itself. Now minus your QP for just a short time. My frame is 896x907 in size and it is showing at 58% of it's size. You can leave at the 58% size for now. You may show a smaller percent size than mine it depends on your monitor size and I have a newer flat screen now that is big.

Bring into PI the paper you want to use for this frame. Now you will have the paper showing and your frame there also but in a different box. Select the paper and RC copy, go over to your frame and make sure that the frame itself is not selected, or click on the background which is now white behind that frame. Go to Edit / Fill and select the same tab Image folder.

In the area where it says Clipboard click there to put a dot in the circle showing it is selected. You will now see the paper you copied in the view screen in that fill box. Select the Fit the Image and OK. You will have that background now behind your frame.

You can X out the big paper you used you don't need it anymore...you can X it out as soon as you R/C copy if you want to.

RC copy on the area behind the frame then select your frame. Go to Edit fill and select the fit the image same as you just did for the background and click ok. Now you have that frame filled you can pretty much see it and if your happy with the way it looks bring your QP back up and slide your frame back onto the QP.
Screen shot 6 below

Doing the frame all by itself and not on the QP will let you see it better while you work on it and putting the huge paper on the area or background of where the frame is will let you use those big papers without too much of a hassle. When you have a paper that was made at 300 dpi and and try to put it in an element made at 200dpi it almost always works when its done this way. If you just try and to use it doing the process in the beginning where I showed how to fill by going to the picture on your computer, using the fill, it will sometimes look strange.

Keep your frame selected...it blends right in to your background now so hard to see it.

Next Shadow the frame. In the Screen shot below I show the frame or part of it at 100% size so you can see it here. I just grabbed any large paper I had on my computer for this that wasn't a seamless tile. Use the default shadow as below in screen shot.
Screen shot 7 below.

Now one more thing before you slide your frame back onto your QP.

On the top bar select Photo/ Focus Select the top row last one and ok as in the below screen shot.
Screen Shot 8 below.

You will be able to see the difference it made as to the focus of the paper on the frame now.

Last just keep the frame selected. Where you have your QP minused you can now bring it back up then take your frame and slide it back onto your QP. Place it back on the QP over top the hole being careful to get it place correctly and no part of the hole space shows.

You can X out the background where you did your frame. If you have a tag you made for your QP you can fill it the same way you just did your frame. If you have a header typed where you have used a fat font that would look great filled you can slide that off your QP and fill it the same way.

If you have any questions as to how to do something or  if  I didn't cover this enough let me know.
